Mile 1,832.4 - 1,858.1

Our highlight today was hiking the rim trail of Crater Lake. It was the first time Balance and I have seen Crater Lake. It was unfortunate that it was overcast and smokey which put a haze over the lake. Still it was spectacular to walk along the rim high above the deepest lake in the United States at almost 2,000' deep. All the postcards show Crater Lake with this turquoise blue color, but today it was more of a flat grey. Still amazing.

Crater Lake this morning from the rim trail.

It was great to finally see Crater Lake for the first time.

The hiker PCT was 7.7 miles around a section of the rim before we rejoined the equestrian trail. Horses are not allowed on the rim trail. The volcanic cone in the middle of the lake is called Wizard Island.

We were told that you can drive around Crater Lake, which is 35 miles. We met a few people who were bicycling around it.

...and back in the woods.

  1. Your photo of Crater Lake is so different from the average, and so dramatic, that I just turned it into a painting! Wonderful shots you have been getting in Oregon.

  2. Yes, the lake is still very dramatic, even if it's not just like the postcards.
