Mile 1,726.6 - 1,737.8

Our motel had a breakfast for us this morning which we enjoyed. After breakfast it was time to resupply from across the street. We need to buy 5 days of food to get to Crater Lake.
By 11am we were packed up and headed out to I-5 to hitch back to the trailhead. Another hiker named "Trek" was already trying for a ride. We joined him and about 20 minutes later a man walked up to us and asked if we were PCT hikers and needed a ride. Problem was he could only fit two people. Trek insisted that we take it. Very nice of him since he was there first.
We loaded up this man's truck and drove off. Another problem, he brought us to the wrong trailhead. Both Balance and I were very confused, but not knowing the area very well we got out and the man drove off. I checked my gps only to fond we were 16 miles ahead of where we should be. Well, neither of us wanted to skip PCT miles, so we had to hitch a ride back and around to the right trailhead. Minutes later a man named "Muddy Knees", who is a section hiker, picked us up and drove us to where we left off yesterday. By now it's 1pm, so a big hiking day is out of the question. At least we are back on the trail.
Our next problem is wildfires. They are all around us. We can see and smell the smoke in the mountains, and any views are obscured by smoke. These fires were cause by lightening strikes in the last big thunderstorm.

How much trash can two hikers generate in one day? The answer: 5 trash bins.

Headed out to hitch a ride from I-5.

Muddy Knees and Balance at the right trailhead. Many thanks to Muddy Knees for getting us out of a jam.

One of the many local fires around us.

Y-Knot blending in with the rocks at Pilot Rock.

Y-Knot showing off his new kicks. This is my 3rd pair of shoes for this trip. I hope these get me through Oregon.

Another great campsite with a piped spring just feet away.

Good Night!

  1. Muddy Knees looks so much like Dad - with a green Subaru and all! Nice of him to come along at the right time, too!
    I like your 'mirror shot'.
