Mile 266.0 - 275.2

Today we did a nero. A nero is a "near zero" hiking day of 10 miles or less. Every hiker has their own definition of a nero. Basically it a half day hiking and a half day resting or doing errands.
Big Bear is an ideal place to do a nero because the town is spread out and the PCT runs the whole length of it. We had to hitch the 5 miles back to the trail this morning. It wasn't an easy hitch. We almost gave up and called it a zero. Meaning hiking no miles. Just then a nice couple pulled over and took us to the trailhead where we left off yesterday.
Once hiking, it was an easy pace not worrying about doing another big mile day. We had just 9 miles to hike today. The worst part was at the end of those 9 miles. It was a dirt road with no traffic and 2.6 miles to walk back into civilization. Those are the miles we don't like. Miles off the PCT that don't count towards forward progress. We did get two nights in town this way.

We called this section "the Pennsylvania Rocks of the PCT".

  1. Nice flower pictures! Quite a variety of colors, too. It's so neat to see the pink wild phlox - the very same flower I have in the garden, but growing wild in the dry rocky areas. The Cholla cactus is awesome too!
How funny that there was a section so rocky that you named it the 'Pennsy Rocks'!
